Richard Peirce Brent (born April 20, 1946 in Melbourne)[1] is an Australian mathematician. Among other achievements, he is known for factoring the eighth, tenth, and eleventh Fermat numbers, using both ECM and a variant of the rho factorization method. He also invented Brent's cycle-finding algorithm, which improves on Floyd's algorithm and is now the standard cycle-finding algorithm used for the rho method.
