Andrew Thall is an American computer scientist. He is an associate professor of mathematics and computer science at Alma College, Michigan.
He received his Ph.D. (2004) in Computer Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where his main areas of research were in medical-image analysis and medial-based geometric surface modeling. His research interests included numerical computation, GPGPU, and computer science education.
He teaches courses in both Computer Science and New Media Studies, with expertise in computer graphics and digital media, in medical image analysis, and in numerical and GPU-based scientific computation.
He has been interested in Mersenne prime testing since 1995, when he was trying to parallelize Lucas-Lehmer test for a Maspar MP-1 (a SIMD supercomputer released in 1990). [1]
In 2010, he presented gpuLucas program.
