In geometry a conic section is the shape made cutting an imaginary cone at various angles.

They are:

  1. Circle: formed by cutting through the cone exactly perpendicular to its axis.
  2. Ellipse: formed by cutting the cone at an angle that is between perpendicular to the axis and parallel to the side.
  3. Parabola: formed by cutting the cone exactly parallel to the side.
  4. Hyperbola: formed by cutting the cone either parallel to the axis or any angle between parallel to the axis and parallel to the side of the cone.
